The Circus Within: Yohann Trépanier

Will on wheels

Ok, first things first: I’ve always admired bicycle messengers. There’s something raw about them. They’re fierce like warriors and kinda hardcore. They inspire respect even though they’re rude and impolite. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with trying to make conversation, just that you don’t have any chance with a bicycle messenger. They’re ubiquitous and always in a rush. It’s not that you’re not worth it. They just don’t have time. They’re in a continuous war against time and the city. I once had a friend who tried himself at this job. He was basically coming back home to put his feet in an ice bucket and went to sleep for the rest of the day. I didn’t see much of him that summer. He was in a constant state of exhaustion. It is a tough job.

The Circus Within : Mélodie Lamoureux

You make my head spin …

It almost seems banal. We’re thrown back to the schoolyard where girls used to jump rope. There’s a nostalgia there; a sense of promise. As if we could just jump in and dance. Simple as that!

Beauté Business

You look like a star to me.

Here are the results of my most recent photo session with the amazing staff of Beauté Business. While planning this shoot, I wondered how I could give it a special look, a glamour / fashion kind of look. But what I thought was going to be a problem turned out to be a solution. Shooting in a hair salon was, I thought, a disadvantage : no white backdrop, no setup for photography. But it turned out, it was a great spot to shoot !

Street portraits

We all do it. We sit in coffee shops and then we get hypnotized by the flow of people walking by. I do it often and I’m always fascinated by all the faces that come and go. Everyone carrying their stories. Every single one of them, reminding us of someone we lost track of or someone we knew well. Different but alike at the same time.
This photography exercise is almost a non-photography exercise. On every photo of this series, the light is diffused, reflected by omnipresent buildings. I didn’t play with the shadows, the perspective. This exercise was a way for me to get in the middle of what I usually watch from the shore. The goal was simple: putting up a white sheet of paper on a wall and then, with my camera dangling from my neck, I had to randomly ask people if I could take their picture.

« Cities are like zoos. I spoke German at first because I didn’t know what you wanted. I thought you we’re begging for money. I’m telling you, you should really read ‘The Human Zoo’ by Desmond Morris. Moi ? Me ? I’m Robert. Don’t forget, you’re part of the zoo, man.»

The Circus Within : Laury-Ann and Guillaume

The circus is in town !

Thanks to the generosity and the endless talent of Laury-Ann Miller and Guillaume Blais, the project “The Circus Within” is back on track. And really, the true talent is in front of the lens, believe me!

The first time we’ve met, we did a session in a restaurant and I wasn’t really satisfied with the lack of people around us. It makes everything look too staged. So out we went !

Even though it’s not as easy as it seems to find interesting spots to shoot, the first problem we encounter was, of course, having authorizations to shoot. So, the beauty of our little operation is that we’re quick and efficient. And the photo beside is a good example of this. We found the spot, I checked the light and asked our talented artists  to check if lady inspiration was there. And then, two minutes later, we were done.

So, there were no worries when a private security agent comes and ask us to leave. “Everything is is the can, buddy!”
